Overview

Kanata Health Solutions Inc. was formed in the summer of 2008. The company is taking to market 7 years of R&D (the Wireless Wearable Physiological Monitor (WWPM)) project managed at the University of Alberta. This project was designed to develop new physiological sensors for integration into health monitoring, health promotion and illness prevention. The University also coordinated the assembly of a cluster of multi-national and Alberta companies, as well as research organizations, for the purposes of:

  • Development of new physiological sensors, software and hardware solutions to overcome, mobility, distance, and determine the frequency of physiological data collection from active humans and animals.
  • Combining their complementary technologies and expertise into integrated e-Health solutions for humans and animals,
  • Creating a new spin-off company from the University of Alberta to develop and commercialize e-Health software and system solutions,
  • Establishing two demonstration sites in Alberta (one each for humans and animals),
  • Define data management requirements for individuals and organizations, such as monitoring stations,
  • Setting the stage for subsequent co-commercialization of e-Health solutions by the participating organizations from an Edmonton-based location.

This project was funded by the Canadian government's department of Western Economic Diversification, the Alberta government's Ministry of Innovation and Science, and in-kind contributions from some of its many partners.
